The previous Guinness World Record was 48 hours, but Mr Wilson beat that by two hours by drawing for 50 hours.

A Guinness World Record official who attended the event said Mr Wilson had broken the record and that it would be officially confirmed in a few days.

At 10:01am Mr Wilson finally put down his permanent marker and left the makeshift studio that had been his home since Tuesday morning.

During the record stint Mr Wilson penned more than 500 caricatures.

Mr Wilson said the attempt was tougher than it looked.

"I've run a few marathons and these marathon events are hard, this was hard work," he said.

"I was very confident at the start thinking 'no I'm fit and healthy, I'll be right', but trying to manage it all, like every hour you get a five-minute break."

Mr Wilson asked the subjects of his caricatures to make a donation to the Canberra Hospital Foundation, an organisation that works to support research at the hospital, as well as patients and their families.

The previous Guinness World Record for the longest marathon drawing of caricatures was held by Gary Javier from Puerto Rico and set in 2011.
